A team led by Professor Lu Jinzhong from our institute has published two English-language academic monographs with Springer.

Recently, the academic monographs Laser Metallic Additive Manufacturing Technologies by Thermal-Mechanical Interaction and Corrosion Resistance Behavior of Metallic Materials Subjected to Laser Shock Peening, authored by Professor Lu Jinzhong, Professor Luo Kaiyu, Associate Professor Lu Haifei, and Dr. Wang Changyu of our institute’s Laser Advanced Manufacturing Team, were officially published by Springer.

Since 2017, when the team first proposed the laser thermal-mechanical interaction additive manufacturing method, they have received funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China’s General Program. They have published six ESI highly cited papers in the International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture and Additive Manufacturing, and were among the first in the world to be granted six U.S. patents and Chinese invention patents. The academic monograph Laser Metallic Additive Manufacturing Technologies by Thermal-Mechanical Interaction* focuses on the principles, characteristics, and applications of laser thermal-mechanical interaction additive manufacturing technology in the (re)manufacturing of critical components for major equipment. By “layer-by-layer” introduction of laser shock strengthening technology during the laser additive manufacturing process, the method induces deep residual compressive stresses and modulates non-uniform microstructures, thereby revealing the mechanism of residual stress/ microstructure under thermal-mechanical interaction, achieving coordinated control of both shape and properties in the fabricated components. The monograph provides a systematic exposition of the technology’s principles, techniques, and typical engineering application cases.

The academic monograph *Laser Metallic Additive Manufacturing Technologies by Thermal-Mechanical Interaction* provides an in-depth and systematic exposition of the patterns and underlying mechanisms governing the influence of laser shock strengthening technology on the corrosion resistance of various structural metals (including stainless steel, magnesium alloys, and titanium alloys). Starting from the interrelationship among “process, microstructure, and properties” in structural metallic materials, the book comprehensively reveals the microstructural evolution and residual compressive stress patterns induced by the severe plastic deformation of laser shock waves, as well as the fundamental connection between these phenomena and the electrochemical corrosion behavior of typical metals. It establishes a relatively complete theoretical framework, thereby filling an international gap in basic research in this field.

The publication of these academic monographs signifies that the Laser Advanced Manufacturing Team at Jiangsu University continues to maintain its competitive edge and distinctive strengths in areas such as laser shock-induced corrosion resistance and laser thermomechanical additive manufacturing. These works provide a solid theoretical and scientific foundation for researchers, engineers, and graduate students working in these fields.

Springer is one of the world’s largest scientific and technical publishers, with a history spanning approximately 180 years. It is renowned for its academic publications, covering a wide range of disciplines including the natural sciences, social sciences, medicine, and architecture. More than 60 percent of the journals published by Springer are indexed in SCI and SSCI, making it one of the most popular and recognized publishing platforms in the global scientific and technical publishing market. It is also one of the first publishers to convert print journals into digital editions.

Appendix: Introduction to the Laser Advanced Manufacturing Team at Jiangsu University

The Laser Advanced Manufacturing Team at Jiangsu University is led by Professor Lu Jinzhong, a Distinguished Professor under the Ministry of Education’s - Program. The team currently consists of 13 members, including three recipients of national-level talent awards. Addressing major national strategic needs, the team continues to conduct in-depth research and original innovation in areas such as laser shock special strengthening of complex components for large-scale equipment in aerospace, nuclear power, and water conservancy; laser hybrid deposition manufacturing; and mobile on-site repair. It has developed distinctive strengths in laser shock nanoscale processing, laser-thermal interactive additive manufacturing methods, and high-efficiency additive manufacturing processes and equipment. Some of these technologies and equipment have been applied by leading enterprises such as Shenyang Liming, Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, Shanghai Aerospace, Yangtze Power, and Ruizhao Laser. The team’s research achievements have been recognized with one Second Prize in the National Teaching Achievement Award, two China Patent Gold Awards, one First Prize in the Ministry of Education’s Huo Yingdong Education and Teaching Achievement Award, four First Prizes in the Jiangsu Provincial Science and Technology Award, and a First Prize in the China Machinery Industry Science and Technology Award, among other honors.
