Professor Lu Jinzhong’s team had their paper selected as one of the “Top 100 Outstanding Academic Achievements in Natural Science” for 2024 in Jiangsu Province

Recently, after a series of procedures including preliminary evaluation, qualification review, professional assessment, and comprehensive evaluation, the research team of Professor Lu Jinzhong from Jiangsu University had their highly cited paper published in the journal *Additive Manufacturing* (impact factor 10.3) titled "Microstructural evolution and tensile property enhancement of remanufactured Ti6Al4V using hybrid manufacturing of laser directed energy deposition with laser shock peening" successfully selected for the 2024 Jiangsu Province Top 100 Outstanding Academic Achievements in Natural Science. This paper is the only one selected from Jiangsu University. The first author of the paper is Assistant Professor Lu Haifei, with Professor Lu Jinzhong and Professor Wei Huiliang from Nanjing University of Science and Technology as co-corresponding authors. This work was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation (51775250) and other funding sources.

The paper breaks through the conventional thinking of laser shock peening as a post-processing technique and introduces, for the first time internationally, a new method of laser thermal interaction layer-by-layer deposition manufacturing for large and complex aerospace components. The research has led to the authorization of five Chinese invention patents and three U.S. invention patents related to the process and equipment. It has established the theory and technology of laser thermal interaction deposition manufacturing, resulting in a collection of 12 papers published in internationally renowned journals, including *International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture* and *Additive Manufacturing*, which are recognized by peers both domestically and internationally as significant theoretical innovations.The theory and methods presented in the paper have been cited multiple times by academicians and renowned scientists in the field and received high praise. The primary technological innovation points identified in the research earned the first prize of the Jiangsu Provincial Science and Technology Award in 2022. Furthermore, the theoretical outcomes of the paper have been applied and promoted in leading enterprises within industries such as aerospace and large hydropower equipment, yielding significant national defense, economic, and social benefits. Additionally, the work was awarded the first prize for the China Industry-University-Research Cooperation Innovation Achievement Award in 2023.

The selection of the "Top 100 Outstanding Academic Achievements in Natural Science" papers in Jiangsu Province is jointly conducted by the Jiangsu Provincial Association for Science and Technology, the Provincial Department of Education, and the Provincial Department of Science and Technology. This evaluation aims to thoroughly implement General Secretary Xi Jinping's important discussions on technological innovation and his significant directives regarding Jiangsus work. It focuses on accelerating basic research, stimulating the innovative vitality of scientific and technological workers, promoting talent and achievement evaluation reforms, and facilitating the transformation of scientific and technological achievements.The paper review committee, led by the Provincial Association for Science and Technology, consists of renowned academicians and experts from various disciplines within the province, as well as relevant officials from the organizing institutions. The committee follows a rigorous selection process to ensure that only the best papers are chosen.
