Research Interests
1.Laser powder bed fusion: process optimization for LPBF using composite materials to eliminate the formation of porosity and micro-cracking in order to enhance the mechanical properties of printed components; FEA modelling of the effect of supporting structures on the thermal stress induced deformation in LPBF; DEM-CFD modelling of powder spreading and laser-powder interaction during multiple material LPBF process, including investigation of multilayer and multitrack molten pool development and bead formation.

2.Laser cladding/laser metal deposition: research on wire/powder-based laser cladding and laser metal deposition processes, as well as additive manufacturing of complex three-dimensional components using laser metal deposition; CFD modelling the gravity and pressure effects in laser metal deposition for potential additive manufacturing in space; investigated the heat and mass transfer inside the molten pool under surface tension and gravity in low gravity situation, and the influence of low pressure on vaporization during laser metal deposition.

3.Laser welding: research on narrow gap laser welding and narrow gap laser welding of dissimilar materials; investigated the effects of process parameters on defects formation including porosity and lack of fusion with side walls; CFD modelling of molten pool dynamics and fusion zone formation in multi-pass narrow gap laser welding
