Research interests

1. Micromachining of Glass using Electrochemical Discharge Machining (ECDM).

This program is to research a hybrid, and high performance micromachining process for electrically non-conductive brittle hard materials such as glass, quartz and certain ceramics, and to reveal the fundamental material removal mechanisms and microscopic phenomena in micromachining of these materials. This project would widen the potential applications of micro components made of non-conductive brittle hard materials in emerging fields such as micro-fluidic systems and micro-electromechanical systems. This novel hybrid process will allow the cost effective machining of complex micro-features on many difficult-to-machine materials. The benefits of achieving these new micromachining capabilities include the creation of new and better devices for biomedical applications, microelectronics, and scientific research investigation.

2. Laser Thermal-mechanical Effect Enhanced Electrochemical Composite Deposition

The research interest includes the effect mechanics of laser enhancing electrochemical deposition. The deposition was prepared in the exposure area by the way of laser scan-round. The SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) was used to observe the surface topography of samples. The tensile strength and micro-hardness of the samples was tested respectively using universal testing machine and micro-hardness tester and the test results of laser enhancing electro-deposition was discussed. According to the experiment, high-quality deposition was obtained at the laser single pulse energy. The results show that the laser could speed up the reduction reaction of metal ions, promote nucleation and grain refinement, strengthen the tensile strength and ductility of the samples .But the effect is two sides to the micro hardness on the surface of specimens, first weakening after enhancing and then restraining. The results are useful to the development of electrochemical machining technology later.

3. Three-dimensional Micro-etching Based on Pulse Laser Electrochemical Hybrid Machining

By integrating ITO (indium tin oxide) conductive glass into the laser electrochemical micro machining system as tool cathode, the efficient combination of laser electrochemical machining was achieved. In the established experimental system, the aluminum alloy was etched by the compound processing of laser and electrochemistry. The thermal-mechanical shock effect of laser local irradiation could remove the passivation layer in a uniform electric field, and the material at this zone is etched. However, the other regional material could not be removed because of the protection of the passivation layer, which enhances the localization of electrochemical machining significantly. The influence mechanism of the thermal-mechanical shock of laser and the refraction characteristic of bubbles on the localization of combined machining was investigated theoretically. Based on the experiment result, the influence of the laser power, machining current and different processing methods on the localization of combined machining was also analyzed.
